TARGET THE WAR HERO DOG

RIP dear Target~ "mistakenly" KILLED at Pinal Animal Shelter in Arizona on Monday Nov 15th!
A War hero dog named Target that lived through explosions in war-torn Afghanistan could not survive a brief stay at an Arizona animal shelter.

The dog, named “Target,” had been brought over recently from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty.
Target was a female shepherd mix, she had been featured in local media and by television host Oprah Winfrey for deeds described as heroic in saving 50 soldiers from a suicide bomber at their Afghan base.

On Friday Nov 12th, county Animal Care and Control received a call about a stray in the San Tan Valley area and picked up Target. The animal had not been microchipped or licensed within the county, but the owner was identified.
Target had not been scheduled to be put down.

Target spent the weekend at the shelter and was euthanized Monday Nov 15th morning, according to the release.

The employee responsible was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures and euthanizing the wrong dog, the county said.
The female employee who has not been identified was SACKED on Friday Nov 19th.

“I am heartsick over this,” Animal Care and Control Director Ruth Stalter was quoted as saying. “I had to personally deliver the news to the dog’s owner, and he and his family are understandably distraught.

“We work hard to get strays reunited with their owners. When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow. Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.

“An investigation is under way and we will cooperate fully. We will also thoroughly review procedures to ensure that something like this does not happen again,” Stalter said. “This is unacceptable and no family should be deprived of their companion because procedures were not followed.”

  1. I think that AVID, Home Again, 24PetWatch, and all the other microchip companies should offer free chipping and registration to military personnel. They provide such a great service to our country, and their pets, regardless of whether or not they are from war torn countries or right here in the US, provide them with unending love. I know from personal experience as a rescuer, microchipping can be very expensive... not necessarily the chip itself, but the registration and renewal. Just a thought, but it would be a wonderful thing.

  3. If they did not kill ANY dogs, they would not have this problem.
